A Faculty Development Initiative

Overview

San Diego State University aims to ensure that all students graduate AI-competent, regardless of their major or field of study. Faculty across disciplines will model responsible, ethical, and discipline-specific uses of AI in teaching and learning.

Leveraging the classification model developed by the University Senate Instructional & Information Technology Committee with their Guidelines for the Use of Generative AI (GenAI) in Assessments & Deliverables (adopted unanimously by the University Senate in May 2025) and now available in the SDSU Curriculum Guide, the initiative aims to get faculty to consider an assignment-by-assignment labeling approach to ensure clear communication with students. Faculty participating in this initiative will not only shape their own courses but also inspire their colleagues across the university to reimagine their pedagogy for this new era.

Goal

Equip one faculty member from each major to serve as an exemplar by embedding AI into a major-required course. This guarantees broad student exposure to AI, aligned with disciplinary practices and Degree Learning Outcomes (DLOs).

Eligibility

  • Must teach a major-required course that runs at least twice in two years
  • Open to tenured, tenure-track, and instructional faculty

Timeline

  • Nominations – November 1, 2025: Faculty complete form; Chairs confirm eligibility
  • Faculty Training – Winter 2025: Orientation + asynchronous program
  • Implementation – Spring/Fall 2026: AI-enhanced assignments piloted
  • Reflection & Sharing – December 2026: Faculty submit “AI in Action” reflections
